Ukraine has taken the fight directly to Russian soil, launching a wave of long-range drone strikes against strategic targets deep within the Russian interior. President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the offensive as 'long-range sanctions,' aimed at dismantling the very facilities that bankroll Vladimir Putin’s ongoing invasion.
The strikes successfully hit the Engels airfield—a critical base for Russia’s strategic Tu-95MC and Tu-160 bombers—as well as a major oil refinery in the Saratov region and logistics hubs in Kaluga and Bryansk. Moscow reported eight fatalities resulting from these operations, while claiming to have intercepted hundreds of drones.
In retaliation, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian ports and commercial infrastructure, including a warehouse belonging to the retailer Rozetka and a postal terminal near Kharkiv, where one civilian death was confirmed.
As the front lines remain largely static, both nations have pivoted to a brutal campaign of targeting energy infrastructure and supply chains.
While Moscow attempts to frame the destruction of logistics hubs like the Wildberries warehouse as terrorism, Kyiv maintains that these facilities are legitimate targets providing essential components to the Russian military.
With peace mediation efforts yielding no results, the conflict has devolved into a high-stakes war of attrition where the ability to strike deep behind enemy lines has become the primary measure of strategic leverage.
