
The reach of Mexican drug cartels has officially extended deep into Africa, as South African authorities recently dismantled a massive, industrial-scale crystal methamphetamine laboratory near the Zimbabwean border.
The raid, which followed a two-month investigation into suspicious activity at a farm in Limpopo province, resulted in the arrest of two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabweans, and one Malawian. Authorities seized drugs and equipment valued at approximately $37 million. This is far from an isolated incident. Since 2023, U.S.
Africa Command officials report that at least 14 Mexican-operated laboratories have been raided across Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa. These criminal syndicates are clearly shifting from mere trafficking to establishing permanent production bases on the continent.
The suspects in the latest bust are scheduled to face charges of manufacturing and possessing illicit drugs. While international bodies point to South Africa's porous borders as a contributing factor, the reality is that these cartels are aggressively expanding their operations to feed a growing global demand for poison.
As these sophisticated, industrial-scale operations continue to surface, it is clear that the influence of Mexican cartels has become a significant and escalating threat to stability across the African continent.
