President Trump has officially signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, signaling a firm stance against a northern neighbor that has long exploited American trade policies. The move follows the collapse of trade negotiations and the subsequent imposition of 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
While Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, have predictably rejected the change, the President has made it clear that the United States will define its own landmarks.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has already pledged to implement the order, stating that waters bordering our nation should reflect the greatness of the United States. This is not the first time the administration has taken such a step; a similar order previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Predictably, the usual chorus of Democratic lawmakers and state officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul, have attempted to obstruct the President’s authority, with some even threatening to introduce legislation to nullify the order.
Despite the predictable outrage from those who prefer the status quo, the administration remains focused on prioritizing American interests over international consensus.
