President Trump concluded his two-day visit to Ireland by announcing the immediate removal of all tariffs on Irish whiskey, a move that levels the playing field for producers in the Republic of Ireland. Previously subject to a 15% tariff as part of EU-wide trade policies, the whiskey will now enter the U.S. market duty-free.
The President made the announcement at his Trump International golf resort in Doonbeg, where he noted that he had consulted with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and golfer Shane Lowry before deciding to scrap the burdensome tax.
While the announcement was welcomed by local business leaders who recognize the economic vitality brought by the Trump International resort—a massive employer that keeps the rural village of Doonbeg thriving—it was met with predictable hostility from a small contingent of protesters.
Despite the presence of agitators, including three individuals arrested for trespassing on the golf course, the local community remains appreciative of the investment and jobs provided by the President’s enterprise.
During his trip, the President also addressed the topic of Irish unity, describing the potential for a united Ireland as a natural progression, a sentiment he characterized as a routine opinion.
As the President departed for Washington, the focus remained on his commitment to fair trade and his support for the local workers who rely on the economic opportunities created by his investments, rather than the fringe voices attempting to disrupt the visit.
