A temporary ceasefire has taken hold in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city that has languished under Russian control since the initial invasion in February 2022.

The truce, successfully negotiated by First Lady Melania Trump, marks a rare humanitarian breakthrough in a region where residents have been forced to survive on garden weeds due to a total lack of electricity, gas, water, and food.

For three years, the city of 24,000—now reduced to approximately 6,000 residents—has been trapped behind Russian lines and mined roads, with previous attempts to deliver aid failing.

The White House confirmed that the First Lady, who previously urged President Putin to prioritize the protection of children and future generations, secured the agreement to facilitate the delivery of aid and the safe passage of civilians.

Both the Russian defense ministry and Ukrainian officials have confirmed the ceasefire is currently being respected, allowing for a humanitarian operation to begin. Despite the relief, deep skepticism remains among residents who have endured years of Russian aggression and fear potential reprisals or restrictions on their movement.

While this diplomatic effort provides a lifeline for those trapped in Oleshky, the broader conflict continues to rage elsewhere, with recent strikes reported in Kyiv and drone attacks occurring within Russian territory.

The success of this evacuation effort remains contingent on the continued adherence to the ceasefire by Russian forces, who previously blamed Kyiv for the humanitarian crisis they created.
