Zambian security forces have moved to secure the state, arresting 11 people in connection with an alleged insurrection plot that authorities say involved foreign nationals and illegal military training camps. The raid, which took place in the capital of Lusaka, resulted in the seizure of high-grade military weapons and ammunition.
According to government official Patrick Kangwa, the suspects posed a serious threat to national security and engaged in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers. Among those taken into custody was opposition candidate Brian Mundubile, who is currently trailing incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema in the ongoing election vote count.
While Mundubile has dismissed the government's claims as fabrications and alleged that the raid was an attempt on his life, the government maintains that the operation was a necessary response to a credible threat of armed rebellion.
Mundubile, who previously claimed victory without providing evidence of his alleged vote tallies, has faced scrutiny throughout the election cycle for making unsubstantiated claims regarding electoral interference and foreign involvement.
As the nation awaits final election results, the government has signaled it will not tolerate attempts to destabilize the country through violence or illegal military activity.
While international observer missions have expressed concerns regarding the electoral process, the government remains focused on maintaining order and addressing the serious criminal allegations against those detained.
