A potential aviation catastrophe was averted this week when a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv became the scene of a life-or-death struggle. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an attacker stabbed a pilot and attempted to crash the aircraft, causing the plane to plunge 17,000 feet mid-flight.
The situation was brought under control only after passengers, including Yaniv Hayun, physically restrained the assailant in a chokehold and crew members stepped in to secure the cockpit.
The injured pilot, Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, is being hailed as a hero for his resolve to open the cockpit door and allow passengers to intervene despite his serious injuries.
While Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has characterized the incident as an 'attempted jihadist terror attack,' Prime Minister Netanyahu stated it is currently too early to determine if Iran played a role in the assault. The attacker was arrested in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be transferred to the United Arab Emirates.
President Donald Trump, who spoke with Netanyahu following the incident, noted that the attacker appeared to be a terrorist. The 174 passengers on board eventually arrived safely in Israel, marking the end of a harrowing ordeal that was only prevented from becoming a tragedy by the swift, decisive actions of those on board.
