A 16-year-old student at Banga National High School in the Philippines committed a horrific act of violence on Friday, murdering two 14-year-old students and wounding eight others before killing himself. The shooter, who had reportedly joked about his plans to friends earlier in the day, carried out the attack after lunch.
Local mayor Albert Palencia confirmed that four of the victims remain in critical condition. This senseless violence marks the third deadly school shooting in the country since June, highlighting a disturbing trend that authorities are struggling to contain.
While the Department of Education has issued standard statements regarding the safety of students and staff, the reality on the ground is that schools are increasingly vulnerable. South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo has called on gun owners to exercise greater responsibility in securing their firearms to prevent minors from gaining access.
As police continue their investigation, classes across the municipality of Banga have been suspended. The frequency of these attacks—following similar incidents in June and August—demands a serious re-evaluation of school security and the enforcement of existing firearm regulations to protect students from those who would turn classrooms into killing fields.
