Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has announced his resignation following the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike. Governor Bill Lee confirmed the departure, stating that Strada’s exit is in the best interests of the state as an independent review into the botched procedure gets underway.
Pike, who was sentenced to death for the 1996 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, survived two lethal injections of pentobarbital on Wednesday. Following the failed attempt, she was transported to a Nashville hospital where she remains in critical condition.
The state has halted all executions for the remainder of the year while authorities investigate the incident. Pike and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, were convicted of beating and torturing Slemmer to death in 1995.
Despite numerous legal challenges and a denied clemency request, the state moved forward with the execution, which had been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. While Pike’s legal team had previously raised concerns regarding her medical history, the Department of Correction maintained that the protocol followed was appropriate.
Officials have yet to provide a definitive explanation for the failure or clarify the future status of Pike’s sentence.
