Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, passed away Monday morning at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. Vice-president Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed that Hassan, an agricultural academic who maintained a low public profile throughout his wife's tenure, had been suffering from a heart condition.

Following the announcement of his death at 08:00 local time, Hassan was laid to rest at his family residence in the village of Kizimkazi on the island of Zanzibar. Hassan married the president in 1978, long before she ascended to the nation's highest office in 2021, becoming the country's first First Gentleman.

The couple shared four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves in the Zanzibar House of Representatives. Regional leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, and Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, have issued statements of condolence to the Tanzanian first family.
