A violent incident in Russian-occupied Crimea has left four people dead after a soldier turned his weapon on both fellow military personnel and local civilians. According to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-installed governor of the region, the gunman first opened fire on his own ranks, killing one soldier and wounding another.
The attacker then moved into the village of Khmelnytske, where he murdered three civilians—two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64-year-old woman. Three additional individuals sustained injuries during the rampage. The perpetrator has been detained, though authorities have yet to release his name or his specific military affiliation.
While Russian officials claim they are investigating the motive, they have strictly warned the public against speculating on the details of the attack. Crimea has remained a flashpoint since Russia’s 2014 annexation, a move widely rejected by the international community.
The region continues to host a significant Russian military presence, which has increasingly become a target for Ukrainian drone and missile strikes amidst the ongoing conflict.
