In a bold move that has rattled the halls of power in Kyiv, former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for the resumption of democratic elections, which have been suspended under martial law since the Russian invasion began in 2022.
Fedorov, who was unexpectedly dismissed from his post last month, argued in a YouTube video that Ukraine’s democratic process cannot be held hostage by Russian aggression. His demand comes amid a backdrop of systemic governance crises and allegations of corruption that Fedorov claims are actively hindering the military's ability to secure victory.
While Fedorov did not explicitly announce a presidential bid, his rhetoric signals the most significant internal challenge to President Zelensky since the war began.
The presidential office has dismissed the idea of holding elections during active combat as 'highly bizarre' and a 'complete lack of realism,' citing the impossibility of organizing a vote for millions of displaced citizens and soldiers on the front lines.
Meanwhile, the country continues to face brutal Russian strikes, including recent attacks in Kherson and Zhytomyr that have claimed civilian and police lives.
As the administration faces pressure from both Washington and Moscow regarding the legitimacy of the current leadership, Zelensky’s government is simultaneously battling domestic corruption scandals, including recent raids on officials within his own office.
While some protesters have rallied for Fedorov’s reinstatement, citing his success in modernizing military technology and drone warfare, other political analysts warn that his call for elections during an existential war could fracture national unity and play directly into the hands of Vladimir Putin.
