The 142-meter superyacht Nord, a vessel linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz this past weekend.
The $500 million luxury craft, which features a helipad and submarine, traveled from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, navigating a waterway that has been under a restrictive blockade by Iran since late February. While Mordashov—the richest Russian national according to Forbes—is not the formal owner, records indicate the yacht is tied to a firm owned by his wife.
This transit occurs as Iran continues to challenge the United States and Israel, with Tehran recently hosting high-level diplomatic meetings with Russian officials to solidify their strategic partnership. While the U.S. Central Command has vowed to intercept vessels associated with Iranian ports, the Nord’s path did not indicate a stop in Iran.
This movement underscores the lengths to which Russian oligarchs, sanctioned by the U.S., UK, and EU following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, will go to relocate their assets to jurisdictions beyond the reach of Western enforcement.
