The digital backbone of the Russian state is feeling the heat as Ukrainian forces successfully struck two major Yandex data centers within the last 48 hours.
Yandex, often referred to as Russia's Google, confirmed that its Sasovo facility in the Ryazan region was seriously damaged and operations were completely suspended, while a second massive site in Kaluga also suffered infrastructure damage. These strikes represent a calculated move by Kyiv to degrade the resources supporting Moscow's war machine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky framed the operation as a necessary, mirror-like response to persistent Russian attacks on Ukrainian data infrastructure. While Yandex claims no employees were injured in their facilities, regional officials in Kaluga reported nine injuries following the drone strikes on local infrastructure.
The disruption has already impacted Yandex's AI chatbot functions and smart home devices, with the company admitting that restoring full capacity is a difficult task. By targeting these hubs, Ukraine aims to force Moscow to divert critical resources away from the front lines to repair its domestic digital infrastructure.
As both nations continue to trade blows against each other's energy and data sectors, the conflict demonstrates that modern warfare is as much about disabling the enemy's ability to process information as it is about territorial control.
