The brutal reality of war has returned to the forefront as Russian forces unleashed five glide bombs on the residential heart of Zaporizhzhia, leaving at least 20 dead and dozens more injured or trapped beneath the rubble. Among the casualties were four children, marking another tragic chapter in Moscow’s ongoing campaign against civilian infrastructure.
Acting Mayor Regina Harchenko described the scene as an attack on the city's very core, with rescue teams working desperately to clear the wreckage of collapsed apartment blocks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not mince words regarding the timing of the strike, explicitly linking the aggression to the recent U.S. decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel imports.
Zelensky argued that the Kremlin interprets any reduction in pressure as a green light to intensify its military operations, noting that 13 other regions were also targeted overnight.
While the White House frames the diesel deal as a strategic move to address domestic fuel costs ahead of the midterms, the immediate result on the ground in Ukraine has been a surge in violence.
With civilian casualties already climbing significantly this year, the latest strikes in Zaporizhzhia, Kramatorsk, and Pryluky serve as a grim reminder that Moscow remains committed to its war of attrition, regardless of diplomatic concessions.
