The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda is in the midst of a volatile succession crisis just days before the burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
While the late king’s family insists he left a 2022 will naming his young, previously undisclosed son as the heir, royal clan elders have unilaterally declared TV presenter Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new monarch.
The late king's sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, has slammed the move, accusing the elders of manufacturing chaos while the family is still in mourning.
The situation has escalated significantly, with the Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, reporting that royal guards have been replaced by soldiers, effectively placing the family under house arrest and restricting their ability to host mourners. She has appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to intervene so the family can bury the late king in peace.
The clan elders maintain that their selection of Kijanangoma follows traditional customs, arguing that the alleged son was never formally presented to the clan as required by tradition.
As the government attempts to mediate the dispute, the kingdom remains in a state of uncertainty, highlighting the precarious nature of traditional succession when established protocols are ignored.
