In a horrific case of criminal negligence, Li Huifang, the operator of the Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, has been sentenced to life in prison for the mass poisoning of 247 children and staff. Li and her staff knowingly used inedible paint—clearly marked as toxic—in the school’s meals to make the food look more appealing to prospective students.
The results were catastrophic, with food samples containing lead levels 2,000 times higher than the national safety limit. The investigation revealed that children were fed steamed red date cakes and sausage corn buns with lead concentrations reaching as high as 1,340mg/kg, far exceeding the 0.5mg/kg safety standard.
The damage to these children is severe, as lead poisoning causes permanent harm to the brain and central nervous system. The court also handed down a 15-year sentence to executive principal Zhi Jinglin and prison terms ranging from six to eight years for four kitchen staff members who carried out the orders.
Beyond the physical assault on the children, the case exposed a deep rot of corruption, as provincial officials and hospital staff attempted to cover up the incident by tampering with medical records and accepting bribes.
While the Chinese government has since implemented new food procurement guidelines, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the consequences when basic safety standards are abandoned for profit.
