The war in Ukraine has spilled over into Romanian territory, as a Russian Geran-2 drone—a variant of the Iranian-designed Shahed—slammed into an apartment block in the city of Galati early Friday morning.
The strike, which occurred while residents were sleeping, punched a massive hole through the building's roof and damaged the lift shaft, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic loss of life. A woman and her teenage son were hospitalized with injuries, but the incident has left the local population shaken and demanding answers.
Residents like Costel Patrichi expressed deep frustration, noting that despite assurances of NATO protection, the Romanian air force was unable to intercept the weapon before it reached a populated area. While Romanian officials confirmed the drone was Russian, Moscow predictably denied responsibility.
In response to the strike, the Romanian government has shuttered a Russian consulate in Constanta, though the Russian ambassador remains in the country. While some in Bucharest considered invoking Article 4 of the NATO treaty to trigger emergency consultations, the option was ultimately rejected to avoid public panic.
As the conflict continues to threaten the stability of the region, residents are left to wonder if the current diplomatic measures and sanctions are enough to deter a regime that has shown a blatant disregard for international borders and civilian safety.
