The world narrowly avoided a catastrophic tragedy this week after an Omani national attempted to hijack a Flydubai flight, stabbing a pilot and sending the aircraft into a terrifying 17,000-foot dive.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that evidence points to the attacker undergoing 'Islamist radical indoctrination' and stated it was 'very likely' the man intended to down the plane.
The incident, which occurred two hours into the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was only thwarted when brave passengers and crew members overpowered the assailant. The injured pilot, Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, is being hailed as a hero for his actions during the crisis and is currently recovering in a Saudi Arabian hospital.
While the attacker is currently in custody in Saudi Arabia, jurisdictional disputes between the UAE and other nations are ongoing. Netanyahu noted that the attacker’s behavior—including shouting 'kill me' after being subdued—confirmed his suicidal intent.
While it remains too early to determine if state actors like Iran were involved, the clear ideological motivation behind the attack serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by radical extremism in the skies.
In response to the security breach, Flydubai has suspended flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv, while Israeli authorities are working to bring stranded passengers home safely.
