Elon Musk has taken a firm stand on the proper use of SpaceX technology, confirming that his company restricted Starlink internet access in Ukraine after discovering the military was using the civilian-grade network to facilitate offensive drone strikes.
Musk made it clear that Starlink was never intended to be a weapon of war, stating that using a commercial service for offensive strikes to kill people is a clear violation of the terms of service.
While SpaceX has provided unprecedented support to Ukraine, Musk emphasized that there is a necessary distinction between defensive infrastructure and offensive military operations. The move comes amid a broader diplomatic standoff regarding Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, which have contributed to global fuel price volatility.
Despite claims from some Ukrainian officials that the restrictions were mysterious, Musk maintained that the policy against offensive use has always been in place. He further clarified that Starshield, the military-grade counterpart, remains under the control of the U.S. government, leaving decisions regarding its use to American officials.
As the conflict continues, the reality remains that private companies providing commercial services are under no obligation to facilitate offensive combat operations that fall outside their operational mandates.
