The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is reeling after a massive fire tore through two schools in the Kadutu commune of Bukavu, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 children. The tragedy, which occurred in a city currently under the control of M23 rebels, triggered a deadly stampede as victims attempted to flee the flames.
Beyond the schools, the fire decimated approximately 300 homes, leaving a trail of destruction in one of the country's most densely populated areas. While rebel-appointed authorities have confirmed the provisional death toll, there are grave concerns that the number of casualties will continue to rise as recovery efforts proceed.
The government in Kinshasa has issued a statement expressing sorrow and promising assessments for school continuity, yet the reality on the ground remains grim. This disaster follows another deadly fire in Kinshasa just last weekend, prompting the government to announce a nationwide push to enforce safety standards in public gathering spaces.
The chaos in Bukavu serves as a stark reminder of the instability plaguing the region since the city fell to rebel forces last February.
