New Jersey Republican Tom Kean Jr. has finally returned to the House of Representatives following a 142-day absence that saw him miss more than 140 legislative votes. Addressing his colleagues on Tuesday, the 57-year-old congressman explained that he had been hospitalized for depression, a condition he described as both physical and emotional.
Kean stated that he initially entered the hospital for routine testing, but remained under medical advice to facilitate recovery. For months, Kean’s office provided only vague statements regarding a 'personal medical issue,' fueling speculation and frustration among constituents and party members who demanded transparency.
As the representative for a critical swing district, Kean’s extended silence created significant political uncertainty for Republicans, who are fighting to maintain their majority in the upcoming November elections.
With Democrats aggressively targeting his seat, the pressure on Kean to resume his duties and justify his lengthy time away from the Capitol remains high.
Having already secured the Republican nomination unopposed, Kean now faces the challenge of proving to voters that he can effectively represent their interests after a period of total legislative inactivity.
