The head of MI5, Sir Ken McCallum, has issued a stark warning that the United Kingdom faces a dangerous new era of instability, with threats from hostile foreign powers and extremist groups reaching levels that dwarf the Cold War.
In a major address, McCallum revealed that state-sponsored threats have quadrupled over the last ten years, with Russia acting as the primary aggressor.
Despite the Kremlin’s attempts to destabilize Europe through hybrid warfare—including cyber-attacks and sabotage—McCallum noted that Russia’s global toolkit is weakening, forcing the regime to rely on low-level criminal proxies to do its dirty work.
Meanwhile, Iran continues to ramp up its campaign of aggression within the UK, with 50 arrests linked to Iranian activities in the last year alone. These threats are increasingly focused on Jewish communities and sensitive military installations.
Beyond state actors, the intelligence chief highlighted the 'supercharging' effect of artificial intelligence, which is being exploited by terrorists to refine attack methodologies, develop drones, and potentially harness bioweapons.
MI5 has already intercepted extremists attempting to weaponize AI, and the service has launched a new AI Threat Assessment Centre to combat these emerging dangers. As the UK maintains a 'severe' terrorism threat level, McCallum emphasized that intelligence operations are now split equally between traditional counter-terrorism and countering state threats.
He vowed an 'unflinching response' to those who seek to cause mayhem on British streets, noting that the 2023 National Security Act is already being used aggressively to dismantle networks operating against British interests.
