Mexico and Peru Mend Ties After Diplomatic Standoff Over Coup-Plotting Fugitive

The restoration of relations follows the departure of Betssy Chávez, a former Peruvian official convicted for her role in a failed 2022 coup attempt.

After a period of severed diplomatic ties, Mexico and Peru have agreed to reconcile, citing a shared history of cooperation.

The diplomatic rift was triggered in November 2025 when Betssy Chávez, a former Peruvian Prime Minister, sought asylum in the Mexican embassy to evade accountability for her role in the 2022 coup attempt led by then-President Pedro Castillo.

Castillo was impeached and arrested after attempting to illegally dissolve the Peruvian congress and install an emergency government. Chávez, who was sentenced to over 11 years in prison last November for her participation in the failed power grab, has now been granted safe passage out of Peru.

While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has welcomed Chávez and continues to voice support for the ousted Castillo regime, the Peruvian government has made it clear that they reserve the right to pursue her extradition.

This diplomatic reset coincides with the recent inauguration of new Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori, signaling a potential shift in the regional political landscape.
