Mexican Government Backtracks After Attempting to Cancel School for World Cup

The Mexican federal government is retreating from an absurd proposal to cut the school year short by a month, a move that would have prioritized soccer tourism over the education of 23 million students.

Education Secretary Mario Delgado had unilaterally declared that classes would end on June 5, citing the upcoming World Cup and extreme heat as excuses to clear the streets for visitors. The decision, which left parents scrambling for childcare and businesses facing sudden labor uncertainty, was met with immediate and justified condemnation.

The National Union of Parents blasted the move as an 'inexcusable' and 'absurd' pretext, noting that the tournament is only being held in three cities. Business association Coparmex also slammed the government for creating chaos, calling for state-level autonomy rather than top-down mandates.

Faced with this revolt, President Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to pivot, reframing the mandate as a mere 'proposal' and attempting to shift blame onto teachers' unions and state officials.

This administrative incompetence comes as Mexico struggles with broader stability issues, including ongoing violence from drug cartels that has already cast a shadow over the country's role as a tournament host.

While the government insists that visiting fans are safe, the attempt to sacrifice the academic calendar for a sporting event highlights a government more concerned with optics than the basic needs of its citizens.
