Meta Axes Thousands of Jobs to Feed AI Spending Spree

Mark Zuckerberg is offloading 8,000 workers as the tech giant pivots to prioritize artificial intelligence over human capital.

Meta is officially cutting 8,000 jobs—roughly 10% of its total workforce—as the company doubles down on its massive investment in artificial intelligence. While employees were warned of the impending layoffs for weeks, the sheer scale of the reduction highlights the ruthless efficiency shift occurring in Silicon Valley.

To fund its $135 billion AI spending target for this year, Meta is not only slashing headcount but also freezing thousands of open positions. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made no secret of his intentions, recently touting the productivity gains of AI tools and suggesting that a single worker using these models can now do the job of an entire team.

This pivot toward automation has created an internal atmosphere of unease, with reports of the company monitoring employee computer interactions to train its models—a move some staff have criticized as invasive.

Meta is not alone in this trend; other tech titans like Microsoft are also offering buyouts as they aggressively reallocate resources toward AI infrastructure. For the thousands of employees losing their roles, the message is clear: in the race for AI dominance, human labor is increasingly viewed as an expendable line item.
