Chaos erupted in central Damascus as two explosive devices detonated near a hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying. Syrian state media reported that security forces identified the devices—one hidden in a vehicle and another in a bin—before they were triggered as specialized units attempted to defuse them.
Among the 18 injured were four police officers. While Macron remained safe at the presidential palace meeting with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, the attack serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by militant groups, including the Islamic State, which have repeatedly targeted government infrastructure.
This violence occurs as Syria attempts to reintegrate into the global stage following the collapse of the Assad regime. The new administration, led by al-Sharaa, faces the monumental task of stabilizing a country fractured by decades of tyranny and a brutal 13-year civil war.
Despite the security risks, Macron reaffirmed his commitment to the region, stating that the aspirations of the Syrian people for a sovereign and united nation remain undeterred by such acts of terror.
