The Iranian military, acting through its Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, has once again threatened global energy security by declaring the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran claims this aggressive move is a response to Israel’s ongoing military operations in southern Lebanon, which Iran alleges violates a recent agreement with the United States.

The regime has issued a direct threat to international shipping, warning vessels to stay away or face jeopardized security. This vital chokepoint, which handles approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, is being used as a geopolitical bargaining chip by a regime desperate to shield its proxy, Hezbollah, from Israeli defense efforts.

While Iran accuses the U.S. of failing to enforce a 14-point memorandum of understanding, U.S. Central Command maintains that safe passage through the strait remains intact, reporting that dozens of merchant ships continued to transit the area on Saturday.

Israeli officials have made it clear that their operations against Hezbollah are separate from any broader diplomatic arrangements and that they will continue to neutralize threats to their sovereignty.

Despite the Biden-Harris administration's attempts to broker a peace deal, Iran’s latest act of economic sabotage highlights the inherent danger of negotiating with a state sponsor of terror that views international agreements only as a means to further its own hostile agenda.
