Social Media Predators Exploit Migrants with 'Mirage' Content to Fuel Illegal Border Crossings

Instagram accounts are peddling dangerous lies and charging hundreds of pounds to facilitate illegal entry into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

A sophisticated network of Instagram accounts is fueling the illegal migration crisis at the Morocco-Ceuta border by peddling 'mirage' content that portrays hazardous sea crossings as safe and easy.

These digital predators are gaming social media algorithms to reach vulnerable individuals, offering to sell 'information' on how to bypass border security for hundreds of pounds. The reality, however, is far from the aspirational videos posted online; the Mayor of Ceuta reports that 100 people have already died attempting these crossings.

The accounts, many of which use the term 'Haraga'—a reference to migrants who destroy their documents to avoid deportation—are actively profiting from the lawlessness. While these profiles claim to offer a path to Europe, the vast majority of the 78,000 migrants who arrived in Ceuta last month were promptly returned to Morocco by authorities.

Despite Meta removing some of these accounts following inquiries, the underlying issue remains: social media platforms are being weaponized to facilitate human smuggling and undermine national sovereignty.

These bad actors are not only endangering lives but are also inflaming diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco, proving once again that illegal immigration is a choice with lethal consequences, further incentivized by those looking to turn a profit on the chaos.
