In a sobering response to the rising tide of violence in Southeast Asia, Thai police have begun conducting active shooter drills in Bangkok high schools. This proactive measure follows a horrific tragedy in August, when a 14-year-old boy murdered eight people and wounded 22 others at a school in Nonthaburi province.
As the threat of school violence crosses borders, local authorities are taking the necessary steps to ensure that students are not left defenseless. By training both faculty and students on how to react in the face of an active threat, police are prioritizing the basic right to safety over the comfort of inaction.
While the left often avoids the reality of evil, these drills serve as a necessary acknowledgment that schools must be hardened, not left vulnerable to those who would do harm.
