Fifa president Gianni Infantino is attempting a political survival maneuver, proposing an independent review of the global football governing body's operations as his leadership faces unprecedented scrutiny.
Following a disastrous attempt to sell off stakes in the World Cup and other major competitions through his now-aborted Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan, Infantino is shifting his tone to appease angry member associations.
The FFE proposal, which would have offloaded 21% of commercial and ticketing rights to private investors, sparked a massive revolt from major confederations, including Uefa and Concacaf. These groups are now demanding that Fifa distribute $10 million from its cash reserves to each of its 211 members.
The pressure on Infantino is immense; Uefa has even initiated criminal legal proceedings in the United States to force the disclosure of documents related to the controversial plan.
While Infantino insists that 'democratic processes' were never for sale and claims he remains fully committed to his fourth term bid in 2027, the sudden pivot toward 'transparency' and 'accountability' suggests he knows his position is precarious.
With critics calling for strict term limits and a total overhaul of his administration's authority, Infantino's promise of a consultation process appears to be a calculated effort to stave off a full-scale mutiny before the upcoming Fifa Council meeting.
