Justice has finally been served in the high-profile case of Tarun Tejpal, the former editor of Tehelka magazine who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a colleague.
The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court overturned a 2021 acquittal that had sparked widespread outrage after a lower court judge bizarrely questioned the survivor's demeanor following the assault.
Tejpal, who once wielded significant influence in Indian media, was convicted under sections of Indian law regarding rape and sexual harassment, specifically for abusing his position of trust and authority. In addition to his decade-long sentence, he has been ordered to pay over 1 million rupees in fines.
The assault occurred in 2013 during a conference in Goa, an event that drew international attention. While Tejpal initially attempted to dismiss his actions as a mere 'lapse of judgement' and later tried to frame the prosecution as a 'political vendetta' against him, the court saw through his excuses.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Goa government, rightly argued that the court must send a clear message that 'no' means 'no.' Tejpal, despite his claims of being a victim of political persecution, will now face the consequences of his actions behind bars.
