Law enforcement in Delhi took decisive action on Tuesday, detaining leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) after they brazenly climbed over police barricades to enter a restricted protest site at Jantar Mantar.
Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were taken into custody after defying official orders and staging a demonstration at the historic observatory, which the federal home ministry recently removed from the list of designated protest venues.
The CJP, a group that emerged from online satire, has been actively challenging the Election Commission over recent revisions to electoral rolls.
While opposition parties and the CJP allege the voter list updates are politically motivated, both the Election Commission and the ruling party have rejected these claims, maintaining that the process is legitimate.
Authorities have been forced to ramp up security across the capital, deploying thousands of police and paramilitary personnel to maintain order as demonstrators attempt to bypass restrictions on public gatherings.
Despite the CJP’s attempts to frame their detention as a suppression of resistance, the reality is that the group chose to ignore established legal channels for protest. The government has provided three alternative, authorized locations for demonstrations, yet these agitators opted to force a confrontation with security forces.
This latest incident follows a broader pattern of unrest in the capital, with police working to manage large-scale disruptions that have impacted metro services and public order.
As the situation remains tense, the government continues to prioritize the enforcement of security protocols to ensure the capital remains functional and safe for the general public.
