As trade tensions rise between Washington and Ottawa, Canadian officials are looking for ways to exert pressure on the United States. While the U.S. remains the dominant economic power, Canada is highlighting its role as the top trading partner for 26 states—including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Maine—and a top-three partner for 45 of the 50 states.
This deep economic entanglement is being framed by some as a strategic advantage that provides Canada with room to maneuver in a trade fight. However, the reality remains that Canada is far more dependent on the American market than vice versa.
Any attempt by Ottawa to weaponize these trade relationships will ultimately be tested against the United States' commitment to protecting its own national economic interests and prioritizing American workers over foreign trade partners.
