Chancellor Merz Vows Retaliation After Hostile Drone Attacks on German Soil

Germany faces a 'very real threat' as investigators link explosive drone incidents to foreign sabotage.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stern warning to those targeting his nation, declaring that perpetrators of recent drone attacks will 'pay a price' for their aggression.

The Chancellor’s comments follow a series of alarming incidents, most notably at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone carrying explosives was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes.

While the device failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger, the discovery of a third drone and traces of the military-grade explosive hexogen underscore the severity of the threat. Leipzig/Halle serves as a vital logistics hub for the German military, NATO allies, and DHL, making it a clear target for hostile actors.

While the German government has stopped short of issuing a formal accusation, security experts and officials are increasingly pointing toward Russian involvement. Merz emphasized that Germany is no longer a bystander, noting that attackers are becoming 'increasingly ruthless' in their attempts to cause property damage and loss of life.

In response, the government is moving to bolster national security, including the implementation of advanced drone defenses and new authorities that would allow security services to strike back at attackers—including through offensive cyber operations against their servers.

Despite the escalating provocations, Merz remains committed to supporting Ukraine, framing Germany’s steadfast military aid as a necessary strategy to force peace.

As unauthorized drone flights continue to plague sensitive sites across the country, it is clear that Germany is finally waking up to the reality that national sovereignty must be defended with strength, not just diplomacy.
