Germany’s attempt to secure a temporary seat on the UN Security Council ended in a stinging defeat this week, as the nation failed to garner enough support from the international body.
Johann Wadephul, a prominent German official, characterized the loss to Portugal and Austria as a 'bitter defeat,' explicitly blaming Russian lobbying efforts for swaying other nations against Berlin.
According to Wadephul, Germany's firm stance in support of Ukraine and its commitment to Israel—which he described as a 'special responsibility'—likely alienated other UN member states. While Germany managed to secure 104 votes, it fell well short of the 134 votes earned by Portugal and the 131 by Austria.
The failure serves as a significant blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had promised to restore Germany’s influence on the global stage but now finds himself facing criticism both at home and abroad.
While Wadephul also cited a late entry into the race as a contributing factor, the results highlight a growing divide between Berlin and the broader UN membership regarding its current foreign policy priorities.
