Two brown bears, Bu and Tyapa, have finally found sanctuary at Wild Ireland in County Donegal after enduring years of horrific treatment in Russia. The bears were rescued from the Republic of Dagestan, where one had been forced to perform in a circus and the other was confined to a cramped, roofless cage so small he could not even stand upright.
According to Wild Ireland founder Killian McLaughlin, the animals were severely malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from kidney damage when they were recovered.
The complex rescue operation, which involved over 100 people across multiple nations, faced significant delays due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and regional conflicts in the Middle East that disrupted transport routes. After being stabilized at a sanctuary near St. Petersburg, the bears were eventually transported via Abu Dhabi to Ireland in August.
Since their arrival, the bears have shown remarkable physical and mental recovery, with veterinary tests confirming their health has stabilized. They now reside in a natural woodland habitat, where staff encourage them to engage in natural foraging behaviors to help them overcome their past trauma.
