The streets of Tirana are currently filled with protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, as a movement initially sparked by a luxury development project has evolved into a broader outcry against his 13-year administration.
What began as a localized protest over the potential environmental impact of a resort project near the Narta Lagoon—involving international investors including Jared Kushner—has expanded into a national demonstration against the Socialist Party’s governance.
Protesters are now voicing deep-seated frustrations regarding the nation's schools, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. Critics, including human rights activist Fatos Lubonja, allege that the country's rapid development and construction boom are being driven by organized crime and corrupt state officials.
While Rama characterizes the protests as a sign of a healthy democracy, his administration faces significant scrutiny, with several of his close political allies currently under investigation by anti-corruption prosecutors.
The growing discontent has even reached within his own ranks, as young MPs like Majana Koceku have resigned, citing a crisis of legitimacy and a disillusionment with the government's shiny facades. As the standoff continues, the protesters remain firm in their demand for change, signaling a significant challenge to the long-standing status quo in Albania.
