Robert Kabera, a 50-year-old former Rwandan army sergeant major who built a significant following as a YouTuber and critic of President Paul Kagame, has been found beheaded in Uganda. Kabera, who had fled Rwanda following sexual assault allegations he vehemently denied, had been living in Uganda as an asylum seeker.
Ugandan police confirmed the discovery of his body on the outskirts of Kampala over the weekend, noting that his head remains missing. While the Rwandan government has maintained silence on the matter, the incident follows a disturbing pattern of deaths involving critics of the Kagame administration, both inside and outside Rwanda.
Kabera’s widow, Jeanne d'Arc Rwigema Uwizeye, has expressed deep fear for the safety of her family in the wake of the killing. This latest violence echoes past high-profile cases, such as the 2014 death of former Rwandan intelligence chief Patrick Karegeya in South Africa, which remains a point of international contention.
Kabera, who had amassed over 144,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, was reportedly inspecting a construction site outside Kampala at the time of his disappearance.
