Zambian security forces took decisive action to neutralize a threat to national stability last Friday, resulting in the death of former government minister Mutotwe Kafwaya during a raid on a property linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile.
Authorities confirmed that a joint security task force was met with armed resistance and gunfire while executing the operation in Lusaka. In the ensuing exchange, Kafwaya, 49, was fatally wounded, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.
The raid, which occurred just one day after President Hakainde Hichilema secured a second term, resulted in the arrest of eleven individuals. Officials have leveled serious accusations against Mundubile’s party, the NRPUP, alleging the group was engaged in insurgency and militia activity while stockpiling high-grade weaponry.
While Mundubile, who has since fled into hiding, dismissed the charges as fabrications, the police maintain that the operation was a necessary response to active threats. Kafwaya, who served as a minister under former President Edgar Lungu, was identified by family members following the incident.
Despite international observers raising questions regarding the transparency of the electoral tabulation process, the government’s commitment to maintaining order remains clear in the face of alleged insurrectionist activity.
