The long-running legal saga surrounding Marry Mubaiwa, the former wife of Zimbabwean Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, has finally reached a conclusion after a magistrate ordered her release from remand.
Mubaiwa had been entangled in a judicial process since 2019, when she was accused of attempting to kill the Vice-President while he was receiving medical treatment in Pretoria. The state’s inability to bring the case to a resolution culminated in a request for yet another month-long delay to secure witnesses, prompting the court to finally intervene.
In his ruling, the magistrate acknowledged that Mubaiwa had endured significant mental, physical, and financial hardship throughout the seven-year ordeal. Her legal counsel slammed the state’s handling of the case, asserting that Mubaiwa’s rights were violated by the excessive and unreasonable delays.
While Mubaiwa celebrated the outcome outside the Harare court as a victory for justice, the state has left the door open for potential future litigation. The case originated during a tumultuous period in Zimbabwean politics, following Chiwenga’s instrumental role in the 2017 ouster of the late Robert Mugabe.
