Former Congolese President Joseph Kabila has dropped all pretense, officially announcing himself as the leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a militant coalition explicitly dedicated to toppling the government by any means necessary, including armed force.
The announcement, made at his residence in Goma—a city currently held by the M23 rebel group—marks a definitive escalation in the country’s instability. Kabila, who was sentenced to death in absentia for treason last year, has finally confirmed his direct involvement with the very forces he previously claimed to have no connection to.
The new coalition features M23 leader Sultani Makenga as a top deputy, signaling a dangerous consolidation of power in the mineral-rich eastern region. Kabila’s move comes after he spent months criticizing President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration, alleging mismanagement and constitutional overreach.
However, his pivot to open rebellion follows the U.S. government’s decision to impose sanctions on him earlier this year for his documented support of the M23 insurgency and his efforts to undermine the Congolese military.
While Kabila attempts to frame his insurrection as a rescue mission for the nation, analysts note he is attempting to leverage his past political profile to draw defectors from the national army.
As the region remains plagued by over 100 active militia groups and ongoing territorial disputes, Kabila’s open declaration of war confirms that diplomatic efforts have collapsed, leaving a violent power struggle as the primary path forward for the former president.
