Senator Ronald 'Bato' Dela Rosa, a key figure in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown on the drug trade, has taken refuge inside the Philippine Senate to avoid arrest by the International Criminal Court.
The standoff began Monday when National Bureau of Investigation agents attempted to apprehend the senator, only to be blocked by the Senate’s protective custody. Dela Rosa, who served as police chief during the height of the anti-drug campaign, is being targeted by the ICC for his role in the operation.
He has rightfully challenged the legitimacy of the foreign court, insisting that any legal accountability must be handled within the Philippine judicial system rather than by international bureaucrats in The Hague. The senator’s lawyers have petitioned the Supreme Court to block the arrest, arguing that the ICC lacks a valid local warrant.
This incident highlights the growing political friction between the Duterte dynasty and the current administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
As the ICC attempts to project its authority over a sovereign nation, Dela Rosa has called on his supporters to maintain a vigil, signaling a firm refusal to submit to a foreign tribunal that many view as a weaponized tool of political interference.
The Philippine Senate has made it clear that it will only honor warrants issued by domestic courts, standing as a bulwark against the encroachment of international organizations on national sovereignty.
