Justice has finally caught up with Okoth Obado, the former governor of Migori County, who was convicted this week for the horrific 2018 murder of 26-year-old university student Sharon Otieno. Judge Cecilia Githua ruled that Obado orchestrated the plot to eliminate Otieno, providing the motive, instigation, and funding for the criminal enterprise.

The victim, who was pregnant with Obado’s child, was found dead in a thicket with signs of rape and multiple stab wounds. The court rejected Obado’s attempts to distance himself from the crime, instead finding that his personal assistant, Michael Oyamo, and county clerk, Caspal Obiero, acted as his accomplices to execute the killing and conceal the evidence.

The case, which gripped the nation, relied on the harrowing eyewitness account of journalist Barack Oduor, who was kidnapped alongside Otieno but managed to escape. Prosecutors successfully proved that the governor’s motive was rooted in his unhappiness over the pregnancy, leading to a well-calculated murder plot.

After a trial featuring 42 witnesses, the court has held these men accountable for their actions. Obado and his co-conspirators are now in custody awaiting sentencing, bringing a long-overdue conclusion to a case that exposed the brutal reality of the crime.
