Family members and volunteers search through the rubble after two 17-story buildings in the Belo Horizonte residential complex collapsed in Catia La Mar, La Guaira (Venezuela), on June 26, 2026.

Venezuela is facing a state of emergency following two massive earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, which have leveled buildings and left thousands of citizens buried under debris. The death toll has already climbed to at least 1,430, with the United Nations estimating that 50,000 people remain missing.

In the coastal state of La Guaira, families are forced to conduct desperate, manual searches for loved ones, often lacking the heavy machinery required to clear the wreckage. While the Venezuelan government claims to be coordinating a response, the scale of the destruction has overwhelmed local resources.

International rescue teams from the United States, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and other nations have arrived to assist in the search-and-rescue operations. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed that she has been in communication with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the deployment of American aid and personnel.

As the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors closes, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with residents reporting a lack of official support in some areas and growing concerns over public health as the smell of decay begins to permeate the hardest-hit towns.

For many, like those sheltering in airport parking lots, the focus has shifted from recovering property to simple survival in the wake of the collapse.
