A diplomatic incident in the West Bank has sparked a war of words, with the Israeli Prime Minister’s office warning that reports of an attack on European diplomats may be part of a coordinated effort to smear the Jewish state.
The delegation, which included representatives from Belgium, France, Poland, and the Catholic Church, was visiting the village of Taybeh near Ramallah to assess conditions during the olive harvest.
According to reports, the convoy was confronted by masked individuals, resulting in a smashed consulate window and allegations of physical assault against a French mayor. While European officials and the Belgian foreign minister were quick to demand sanctions and accountability, the Israeli government has pushed back against the rush to judgment.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar noted that the visit was not coordinated with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in advance, which would have been necessary to ensure the security of the visitors.
The Prime Minister’s office further emphasized that social media footage does not provide the full context or sequence of events, urging the public to wait for the results of an official investigation by Israeli police. The IDF has also condemned the violence, confirming that no soldiers were present at the scene when the incident occurred.
As the situation remains under investigation, Israeli officials are highlighting the broader context of a recurring campaign designed to vilify Israel during the annual harvest season.
