The mask has slipped, and the reality of Moscow’s hybrid warfare is now impossible to ignore.
After German authorities confirmed that Russia was behind a failed drone attack on Leipzig airport—a critical Nato hub used for Ukrainian logistics—the heads of Nato and the European Commission have declared that the Kremlin’s recklessness has reached a new, dangerous threshold.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen rightly stated that this was an act involving military-grade material carried out by Russian operatives on EU soil, declaring that such aggression will no longer be tolerated.
German investigators identified two suspects in the Leipzig incident, both holding Russian passports, who utilized tourist visas and commercial flights to facilitate their operations. In a predictable display of defiance, the Kremlin has dismissed the evidence as unfounded while retaliating by shuttering German cultural centers in Russia.
This attack is not an isolated event; it is part of a broader pattern of sabotage targeting critical infrastructure across the continent, including fires at defense factories in Poland and power grid disruptions in Germany.
While bureaucrats in Brussels and Berlin discuss further sanctions and visa restrictions, the reality is that Russia’s shadow war against the West is escalating. As Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized, the alliance stands in full solidarity with Germany, but the time for mere diplomatic hand-wringing is over.
With Russian operatives actively sabotaging factories and infrastructure, the West must move beyond empty rhetoric and deliver a decisive, coordinated response to secure its territory and hold the Kremlin accountable for its direct attacks on European sovereignty.
