The volatile situation in Ethiopia has taken a sharp turn as residents in the town of Adigrat report seeing truckloads of Eritrean soldiers moving deep into the Tigray region.
This mobilization comes amidst renewed fighting between the Ethiopian national army and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), a militant group that has long challenged the central government. The conflict, which reignited two weeks ago, follows the collapse of a 2022 peace deal, with both sides trading blame for the current instability.
Ethiopian officials have now openly accused Eritrea of direct military participation, with senior official Abraham Belay stating that the Eritrean army is fully engaged in the conflict.
While Eritrea has previously denied such involvement, the presence of heavy weaponry and troop convoys passing through Adigrat toward Edaga Hamus suggests a significant escalation. The TPLF, which recently withdrew from the regional capital of Mekelle, remains a central actor in a new alliance of armed groups that threatens to destabilize the Horn of Africa.
As diplomatic relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara have fractured over territorial and maritime disputes, the return of Eritrean forces to the battlefield marks a precarious moment for regional security.
Residents in the area report that the military buildup includes anti-aircraft guns and large-scale troop deployments, further complicating an already deadly conflict that has left the region on the brink of humanitarian crisis.
