The Black Sea has become a dangerous theater of war as Russian drone strikes continue to target commercial vessels, leaving at least seven crew members missing following an attack on the San Marino-flagged Wine Trader.
The tanker, which was empty of cargo, was struck by two drones approximately 13 nautical miles off the coast of Romania, triggering a massive search and rescue operation involving Black Hawk helicopters and rescue vessels.
This latest act of aggression follows a string of similar strikes in the region, including an attack on the Yara J tanker and the sinking of a merchant ship off the coast of Bulgaria earlier this week.
While Moscow claims it is targeting vessels carrying military supplies, Kyiv and its Western allies maintain that Russia is deliberately terrorizing merchant shipping routes.
The escalating violence has prompted leaders from Romania and Bulgaria to head to Brussels to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where they are expected to discuss the potential invocation of Article 4 of the NATO treaty to address the direct threat to territorial integrity and maritime security.
As Russia continues its 2022 invasion, the Black Sea has effectively become a critical front in the conflict, with European officials condemning the attacks as an unacceptable escalation of hostilities.
