Justice has finally been served for the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. A court in The Hague has sentenced Eugene N, a 66-year-old Dutch-Rwandan citizen, to life in prison for his direct role in the horrific massacres that claimed the lives of 800,000 people.
As a local administrator in Mbazi, Eugene N abused his position of authority to oversee the brutal slaughter of Tutsis, including the cold-blooded act of throwing hand grenades into a stadium full of people seeking shelter.
The court rejected the defendant's pathetic attempts to portray himself as a victim, noting that he held significant influence and actively directed the violence, from ordering the looting and burning of homes to commanding the final execution of stadium survivors with clubs and machetes.
While the defendant’s legal team attempted to play the victim card, claiming he was a 'broken man' and planning an appeal, the court correctly determined that only a life sentence could begin to address the gravity of his crimes.
This conviction follows a years-long investigation by Dutch authorities, proving that those who commit atrocities cannot hide behind foreign citizenship forever.
